la haine 1995 movie poster2

Yesterday I was on a trip with my college, and we watched the French classic La Haine. Honestly, I did not know what to expect, but just a bunch of posh french guys that are in trouble but no!

The movie is about 3 young immigrants living in the French suburbs just after a huge riot has just occured. All 3 young men have different mindsets about the world and violence around them once one of their friends was brutally attacked by the police during the riots and lies in a coma. One of the main characters, Hubert, is an Afro-French boxer whose gym was burnt down during the riots, he is the most mature out of the 3. Then there is Vinz, who see’s himself as a gangsta who finds a gun which was lost during the riots; since he found the gun he suddenly feels on top of the world. Lastly, we have Sayid who is the funny one in the group but shares both sides of Hubert and Vinz.

Personally, I feel that the film is amazing, showing the urban youth and rise of the youth in France. However, there was a lot of references to drugs and violence too much in the film, making it seem glamorised. Also, the language used was very strong but it was language that was aimed at young people who like it, for comedic use.

There is one joke/quote you should look out for in this trailer; Its not the fall that kills you but the landing…
