Chris Made an appearance on the 106 & Park talking about his latest video Fine China which will be released on his new album “x”. The video is almost a short film where he has to protect his girlfriend, the daughter of a Chinese gangster, from a gang of thugs with his expert break dance kung fu moves, like a Michael Jackson-Bruce Lee hybrid. However it is not all break dancing in the video. Chris throws in a little twist of Azonto which is a very popular dance in Africa at the moment and slowly becoming know in Europe too. Azonto is a dance which originated from Ghana, the dance involves a frenzied set of hand movements that either mimic everyday activities or are meant to signal an often comical intention. It begun with one or two step movements but has been advanced to more complex and almost acrobatic movements. Just like most African dances, knee bending and hip movements are rudiments to dancing it. The dance has effectively evolved from a few rudimentary moves to embrace depictions of ironing,washing, driving, boxing, grooming, praying, swimming, and others.
Chris Brown revealed he had infused the Ghanaian dance move into the video and attributed its origination to Nigeria. He also recalled meeting Nigerian pop singer Wizkid who taught him the dance move. Understandably, Ghanians are unhappy about Chris Browns wrong assumption on the origin of Azonto, with one blog ‘Ghana Celebrities’ posting in an article;
‘ WTF: Chris Brown Talks About AZONTO On BET, But He Says The Dance Is A Nigerian Thing… ‘
Wrong move Chris. Wrong move. This has now sparked up a very enjoyable controversy between the Nigerians and Ghanaians about who does it better and who is making the dance global.
