300: Rise Of An Empire

So I saw a tweet once, and it said something along the lines of Leonardo Di Caprio having the same number of Oscars as the person who tweeted it. This made me a little bit upset as I remembered that it is in fact very true that he has none, just like me and you. I am a massive, massive Leonardo Di Caprio fan. I am an advocate of his work, and I think he’s absolutely fantastic. So when a film comes out that he’s in, I go and watch it, indefinitely.
The Wolf of Wall Street did not disappoint. It starts with Di Caprio, playing shady stockbroker Jordan Belfort, remarking on the fact that he made $49 million that year, which he’s ever so p*ssed about, because it’s $3 million short of a $1 million a week. This essentially sets the scene for the entire film. Belfort starts off as a “fresh out of college” guy, chasing the American Dream. But his chase of success quickly becomes corporate greed. It’ excessively excessive and some have actually criticised it for showing the highs of drug usage without showing the lows. I disagree. There’s an absolutely brilliant scene where Di Caprio very explicitly showcases the lows of drug usage whilst driving home. I was howling. Literally.
The film is stylish, slick and insanely scandalous. It has broken the record for the most instances in which the word “f*ck” is used (it is used a grand total of 569 times). You get immersed in their world and each character is infectious in their act. Di Caprio plays Jordan Belfort amazingly, and Jonah Hill as his loyal, yet more-than-slightly-unhinged sidekick Donnie is flawless. Matthew McConaughey explaining the financial importance of masturbation in the world of stock broking is also applause-worthy.
The Wolf of Wall Street is a solid 9 out of 10, and deserves all the Oscars it can get. Go and watch it. Go and laugh. Go and feel invincible. Go and feel wary. Go and look at the stunning Margot Robbie who plays Di Caprio’s incredibly sexy wife, Naomi. Go and enjoy if you haven’t already. It is definitely worth it.
